Success with our Students

Pastoral Care
Although we are an extremely large school we ensure that students do not feel lost in the system. Each students is the school is allocated an academic mentor whose role it is to mentor, support and advise the fifteen students in their care on all aspects of school life. At their meetings, which occur three times a half term and could be either in groups of 4 or on an individual basis, academic mentors set appropriate academic behavioural targets. All students targets are recorded in their learning journal, which are regularly reviewed and adjusted according to progress. We see academic mentors as having a pivitol role in the progress of all students. Over and above this, each year group has a Pastoral and Deputy Co-ordinator , who oversee and co-ordinate the role of the academic mentors . Students and parents are encouraged to talk to pastoral co-ordinators about any worries or concerns they may have.

The School Council
Each class has a School Council Representative. These meet regularly to discuss ways of improving the school and other issues of most concern to students.

Encouraging students to take responsibility is one of the main ways in which we develop their personal and social skills.

Work Experience
Every student in Year 11 has two weeks work experience, where they find out what life is really like beyond the safety of the school environment.

All BTEC students in the Sixth Form also have work experience, with employers linked to their particular subject area.

All work experience contributes towards each students' personal curicculum vitae.

From classroom to Concert Hall
Many of the skills learnt in the classroom are built upon later in the day. Many after-school clubs are held, including:

  • Drama club
  • Music, Media, Dance & P.E. club
  • ICT club
  • Revision clubs in all subject areas
  • Homework club for Y10 & Y11
  • Study Support Clubs

As well as these, drama, dance and music hold several concerts during the year which involve large numbers of students from each year group.
