Success with Parents and the Community

Parents
Parents are far more important in the education of their child than even they are sometimes aware. We develop the relationship with our parents before their child comes to the school:

  • a meeting with senior staff towards the end of Year 6 to explain the way the school works
  • an induction day for all Year 6 pupils, who spend a day at Barking Abbey to become familiar with our routines
  • a series of Parents' Link Evenings, starting in Year 6 to explore 'How to help your child succeed at Barking Abbey
  • Parents' Link Evenings in Year 10 for 'How to help your child succeed at GCSE' and 'Helping your child to revise for GCSE'
  • Parents' Evenings in each year
  • immediate contact with parents if there are problems with homework
  • an 'open house' policy which invites parents to come to the school to discuss their concerns
  • an annual Presentation Evening for parents and students to celebrate achievement
  • online information system
  • Email contacts with teaching staff

Community

We work closely with our community partners. With our linked primary schools, we have established close working practices designed to ensure there is a smooth transition to secondary school. Students at Barking Abbey work widely with members of the community:

  • annual Christmas lunch for Senior Citizens organised and run by the students
  • raising money for a number of charities
  • work experience in Year 11 and the Sixth Form
  • local sponsors as part of the Sports College programme
  • leisure Centre also running a wide range of sports and computer courses
  • Links with both local and national organisations
