The Council's bid for over £1 million worth of capital funding for 10 UK On-online centres had been successful. Barking Abbey is one of the lucky ten. The new centres will be a breath of fresh air for people of all ages, as they will offer formal and informal learning, access to computers and the internet for those who want to improve their IT skills or just surf the net.

Barking Abbey recieved the School Achievement Award in both 2001 and 2002.

"Education Action Zones allow local partnerships - schools, parents, the community, businesses and local authorities - to find radical and innovative solutions to their problems.....They must set themselves demanding targets for improvement." Tony Blair, PM 1999.

Barking Abbey is proud to have been given the status of Beacon School in 2002.

Barking Abbey is a Specialist Sports College. We are proud recipients of the Sportsmark Gold Award.

Investors in People is the national Standard which sets out a level of good practice for training and development of people to achieve business goals.

The school was recently awarded the Basic Skills Agency Charter Mark in recognition of the excellence of our work in basic literacy and numeracy.

The school was awarded the Schools’ Curriculum Award 2000 in recognition of its links with the community.

Our mission is to build a world class network of innovative, high performing secondary schools in partnership with business and the wider community.

We are part of an Excellence in Cities programme (concentrating on Out of Hours Learning, Learning Mentors and Gifted and Talented Students) and a small Education Action Zone.
