Specialist Humanities College

Barking Abbey School became a Humanities Specialist College in 2005.The purpose behind becoming a Humanities College is to help students foster an understanding of human values and attitudes, past and present and how society is organised, as well as how it develops and changes. We use our specialist status to raise the standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning in the Humanities subjects for all our students.

Since becoming a Specialist College, the Humanities departments, which are English, History and Geography, have contributed to whole school improvement by developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.  We develop and share good practice across the curriculum, particularly between the specialist subjects. We have also led whole school improvement in Assessment for Learning and the use of VLE (Virtual learning). As well as this we have raised the post-16 participation rate in all of the three specialist subject areas, and provide young people with the skills needed to progress into employment, further training and higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.

Humanities Block

We are in the process of becoming fully active partners in a learning society with our local families of schools and their communities, sharing resources and developing and sharing good practice. We have worked particularly closely with our main feeder primary school (Manor Juniors) and have forged particularly strong links in regards to History provision. Geography and English are in the process of further developing and improving transition units of work with Manor and our other link primary partners. We also have strong links with secondary schools throughout the UK, and a number of universities. Excellent practice is shared by Barking Abbey staff through regular contributions at National Conferences.

Learners at Barking Abbey have developed their active contribution to wider society and have the opportunity to work in partnership with the wider community, including business and industry, to enhance opportunities for lifelong learning in the context of Humanities.

Humanities Council

The Humanities Council, which consists of students from Years 9-12, was set up recently. The aims of the council and the members are to promote the Humanities specialism within the school, and to try and achieve the specialism aims and targets set by the council members. So far the council has interviewed their peers to gain their opinions on what makes ‘The Perfect Lesson’. Baafour Yeboah
