Identifying students
Students who are gifted in RE (KS3) and RS (KS 4 and 5) are likely to demonstrate the following abilities and skills:

1. Show high levels of insight into, and discernment beyond the obvious and ordinary.

2. Make sense of, and draw meaning from, religious symbols, metaphors, texts and practices.

3. Be sensitive to, or aware of, the numinous or the mystery of life, and have a feeling for how these are explored or expressed.

4. Understand, apply and transfer ideas across topics in RE/RS and into other religious and cultural contexts, and between RE/RS and other subjects of the curriculum.

5. They may also have highly developed skills of comprehension, analysis and research.

6. Display these skills verbally although not necessarily in a complex written form.

7. Show quickness of understanding and depth of thought.

8. Show positive engagement with the subject, and seek to pursue it for its own sake.

HOW DOES RE/RS OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIFTED STUDENTS?

1. Encourage students to develop and apply knowledge, understanding and skills at high levels e.g. does God exist, the case for and against life after death.

2. Explore a range of approaches to the philosophy and ethics of religion e.g. can God allow evil to occur? Is abortion acceptable? Can we always allow freedom of speech on every matter?

3. Develop thinking skills such as argument, reasoning and logical debate e.g. can individuals really experience God? What is a higher form of authority religion or law?
