Gifted and Talented - Music
Identifying students
Pupils must obtain at least four of the criteria listed below to be eligible for gifted and talented status.
Key Stage 3:
-
Be able to maintain a pulse and rhythm
-
To be able to identify and apply musical elements including; dynamics, tempo, duration, articulation, instrumentation.

Read and understand concepts of notation within both the bass and treble clef.

Have the ability to perform on a chosen instrument, with confidence, demonstrating a basic level of accuracy and musical interpretation.

Demonstrate a basic level of creativity within composition work. Use melodies and basic chord structures competently within a given structure.
Key Stage 4:
-
Be able to select and maintain a pulse and rhythm and react appropriately to given tempo markings.

Identify and describe the use of musical elements within a range of musical context.

Read and understand concepts of notation within both the bass and treble clef. Understand and demonstrate phrase shape and pitch relativity.

Have the ability to perform on a chosen instrument, with confidence, demonstrating a basic level of accuracy and musical interpretation, within a range of musical contexts.

Demonstrate creativity with composition work, showing a basic understanding of resources, including chords, melodies, structures and contrasts.
Key Stage 5:
-
Demonstrate and maintain internalised pulse and rhythm. Initiate and react to appropriate tempo changes.

Identify, describe and explain a range of musical elements within different genres. Including written analysis.

Read and understand concepts of notation within the bass, treble and alto clef. Understand and demonstrate phrase shape, pitch relativity and harmonic relativity.

Have the ability to perform on a chosen instrument, with confidence, demonstrating a advanced level of accuracy and musical interpretation, within a range of musical contexts.

Demonstrate an extensive repertoire of musical resources within composition work to create an intended effect.
Extension Activities
To maintain and develop your musical skills we advise the following:
-
Practise your instrument everyday; Key stage 3 – 20mins; Key stage 4 – 30mins and Key stage 5 – 40 mins.

Regularly listen to a range of music considering how musical elements are used within each piece of music.
-
Take the opportunity to be involved in as many musical activities as possible.
