Modern Languages Department

The Modern Languages Department at Barking Abbey is a thriving
department, which operates very much as a team. All staff have clear
aims and objectives with excellent subject knowledge and high expectations.
At KS3 in French and German pupils are taught through detailed
schemes of work, which have been developed to satisfy the requirements
of the National Curriculum. They are closely based on the programmes
of study and allow for assessment against the National Curriculum
statements of attainment. We have recently benefited from being
part of a pilot for the National Framework for Languages and worked
closely with the LEA.
The schemes of work have been organised to ensure a balance of
the four attainment targets with staff encouraged to use the full
range of teaching and learning styles. Formal testing is an integral
part throughout all of the key stages.

French and German are taught in sets. Course books and online activities
are EXPO, Klasse, Logo and Metro. At KS4 options available are offered
in French and German and we continue to have a good uptake in languages
as their importance is recognised. French and German are currently
following AQA examinations. We have seen some excellent results
at GCSE in both languages since the adoption of this syllabus and
performed well above the National average since 1999. We keep a
departmental data base to track student performance and monitor
results. At A level AQA syllabus is taught in both German and French.
We are involved in a number of activities beyond that of the classroom.
Each year the majority of our Year 7 students participate in either
a one-day visit to France or a four-day stay in Boppard and Berlin,
Germany. Annually in Year 9 we visit The Europa Centre in Hornchurch
– a language simulation centre. Both Year 11 and A level students
attend supplementary support courses outside school at various centres.
Each year, students have the opportunity to take part in a week’s
work experience in Germany or France, during the Lower Sixth and
this has been to date part funded by the school.
July 2003 and 2004 thirty Year 9 students took part in a Euro Day
in London. This event was organised by UCL with the intention of
raising and promoting cultural European awareness. Our most able
students attended and sampled at least one new European Language
– even Danish.

Last year a good number of language students attended our study
support programme, which ran after school, to enhance results and
support coursework. The most able students in Year 9 also attended
a Gifted and Talented Day organised by our teachers and the LEA
All language staff are given the opportunity to attend professional
courses linked to the school/departmental action plan, alongside
their own professional development. As a team we take on board the
need to strive towards excellence in our teaching.
As part of the ICT Test Bed Pilot we are now actively incorporating
technology in to our language teaching at all levels and look forward
to enhanced student performance and motivation in our curriculum.
The year ahead will be an exciting one.
NEW FOR 2004/2005
Being part of the National ICT Test Bed project has helped us immensely.
We have invested in Expo Electo and Logo – in both teacher
presentational and pupil activity packages. This really is enhancing
our teaching and provides an on-line independent student resource.
We continue to expand our use of web-sites in the classroom.
We have been fortunate to have had installed this year Satellite
TV in all classrooms and are able to use French and German TV channels.
We look forward to enhanced student performance and motivation
in our curriculum.
Clubs offered: Italian, French, German Club and Satellite TV.
Last year a good number of language students attended our study
