SYLLABUS DETAILS
This course looks at Food & Nutrition. The syllabus is
divided into four units and with each of these units there
will be a large element of practical work. Students will be
expected to plan practicals and bring in necessary ingredients.
The four units are:
- Food and Health
- Characteristics and properties of food
- Food quality
- Food and Technology
Assessment details:
- 1 short focused task (coursework) 30%
- 1 Board prescribed task (Set in February)40%

- 1 Final examination. 30%
Short focused task: These will be set throughout the course
in normal lesson time and based on the four units. E.G. Plan
and make one sweet and one savoury high fibre dish or plan
and make two high energy food products that an athlete might
find beneficial.
Board prescribed task: This set by the examination board
in February of Year 11 e.g. a fast food outlet wants you to
investigate and produce a range of dishes that will hopefully
encourage parents and children to choose a healthy option.
In both of these areas students will be encouraged to use
many of the Department ICT facilities.
The food industry is growing and employs around 500,000 people
in the U.K. There are many educational opportunities using
food from “A” levels, AS, NVQa, Degree and Higher
Degrees.
Employment opportunities include:
Teaching, Journalism, Health Education, Food Technologist,
Counsellor, Research, Demonstrator, School Meals, Food Production,
Environmental Health, Food Management.
