Geography Department
The Geography Department has 4 well-qualified members of staff
who teach geography almost exclusively. As a department, we aim
to give our students exposure to activities that cover the human,
physical
and environmental aspects of geography as well as teaching a range
of skills for life.
Some of what we teach in Key Stage 3 looks very familiar to anyone
who has studied geography, such as:
Other parts look a bit more unusual, such as:
- The Geography of Football
- Crime in Barking and Dagenham
At Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), we follow the very
popular Avery Hill specification.
In years 12 and 13 we follow the Edexcel B specification, which
engages students in an interactive approach to studying Geography.
As a department we are committed to doing real geography outside
of the classroom. Sometimes this is in the school grounds, on other
occasions within a short distance of the school and on occasional
visits further field. We have regular day visits to:
- Walton on the Naze to study coastal erosion and protection, in
year 8
- Canterbury, to look at the impacts of tourism on the city in, year
9
- Cambridge to consider the effects of the high-tech industry in
year 10
- Two days to the south coast and 5 to the Teesside in year 12 to
cover aspects of AS level
- We also aim to run 6 day continental visits. Recent venues have
included the Swiss Alps and Provence in the South of France.
