Dance Leaders
Award
Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership
This is a leadership qualification that is accredited by Sports
Leaders UK. It requires students to take part in leading dance activities
to other young dancers and volunteer their time to take a leading
but supported role in organised dance activities. At Barking Abbey
School this qualification is kick started with a project with one
of our feeder primary schools. This year we had a Bollywood project
with Year 2 students from Manor Infant School that was performed
at the Boroughs Molten Festival.
After this project students
undertake various units to gain the qualification such as:
- Communication and organisational
skills.
- Planning and preparation.
- Assisting with a dance activity.
- Health and Fitness.
- Safe Practice.
- Music and dance relationships.
- Opportunities in dance.
- Leadership.
Leadership Activities
In the last part of the course students will be assigned in pairs
to a local primary school or youth dance group and will help to
lead and choreograph dance sessions. Each pair will work together
to decide on the stimulus for their group and will work on creating
a short dance piece. This culminates with a performance of all of
the work created by students at the borough primary dance festival
in July.
Once students have completed these units successfully they will
then receive the Dance Leaders Award.
