These are our main achievements and impact:
- The development of a personalised learning programme catering
for individual academic, fitness and pastoral needs. It has been
over-subscribed in the first two years.
- Improved opportunities for post-16 accreditation opportunities
at the school, such as the BTEC First Diploma in Sports Science
and the Intermediate GNVQ in Business Studies, and improved opportunities
in PE-related subjects. We currently have 60 students following
the BTEC National
Diploma course in Sport and Exercise Science and 12 students in
the first cohort of the BTEC First Diploma.
- We have secured financial support from Adidas and the Professional
Footballers Association.
- Student independence has improved/ as has their capacity for
self-motivation. For example, the boys now raise their own funds
to help cover the costs of tours, kit and so on.
Other achievements have included the following:
- Five of the first cohort of students are playing as full-time
professionals
- Max Porter, Southend United
- Joe North, Southend United
- David Hogan, MK Dons (Wimbledon)
- Wesley Thomas, Queens Park Rangers
- Bradley johnson, Cambridge United
- A number of students have trialled for clubs in the English
Divisions 2 and 3, as well as for clubs in the Italian Series
C.
- Students have been invited to the English Schools coaching
course at Keele University.
- Several Year 12 students are involved in the West Harn 'Football
in the Community' project.
- One of our teams reached the third round of the FA Youth Cup
and students have represented Essex under 19s.
- Barking Abbey enjoyed success at a professional football tournament
in France where we were the only non- professional club. Further,
Brian Alidjah won Player of the Tournament and both the players
and the staff received the 'fair play' awards.
- All football students have been given the opportunity to progress
through their levels 1 and 2 coaching awards. We have an FA coach-educator
on site and are currently applying to be a 'Ist 4 Sport' approved
centre which would enable us to deliver courses on site.
- Clear pathways have been identified for students to progress
into higher education and strong links have been established with
Higher Education Institutions such as Loughborough and Bath Universities.
The first cohort of football students are applying for university
places this year (2004/2005).
- All Year 1 3 football students have been involved in refereeing
and coaching inter-form competitions in football, cricket, athletics,
rugby and basketball. A number also coach and referee football
at primary schools and at their previous clubs.
- All Year 12 students are currently involved in the 'Community
Challenge'. This involves them identifying a local need, finding
a practical way to address it and then reporting back to the whole
of Year 12 in a formal presentation.
