Contact between Home and School

We hope that we have already given you the feeling that parents are very welcome at the school. The development of positive links between parents and the school is a vital factor in the achievement of a student's progress.

  1. INTERVIEWS
Normally, interviews will be with the Year Co-ordinators because they are the people who know the students very well. The Head Teacher and other senior staff are always very happy to see parents but, because of their knowledge, would normally ask the Year Co-ordinators to be present to help in the discussion.

Parents are requested to make an appointment wherever possible as all staff have teaching commitments. It is rarely possible to see parents who arrive at school without an appointment.

  2. MEETINGS FOR PARENTS
We consider that these meetings are one of the most important links with the home and there is a full programme of progress and educational meetings.

    Year 7: November and July
    Year 8: July
    Year 9: February
    Year 10: June
    Year 11: November
    Year 12: October & January
    Year 13 February

We also hold the following parent link evenings:
Year 7: A series of meetings
    Year 8: September
    Year 9: September
    Year 10: September & March
    Year 11: September

  3. NEWSLETTERS
During the school year pupils bring home letters and a twice-monthly newsletter which keep parents in touch with school news and future events.

  4. PUPIL PROGRESS SUMMARIES
Each student has a termly Pupil Progress summary. This records their progress in five crucial areas:

    Effort in classwork
    Effort in homework
    Overall achievement
    Attendance
    Handing work in on time.

Where appropriate, students also receive a comment.

  5. OTHER BOOKLETS
Apart from this document for students new to Barking Abbey and their parents, the school also sends out a number of other information booklets including Year Ten 'GCSE Option Choices' and 'The Sixth Form'.
